For today’s top ten, we’re bringing you ten club legends who returned to manage these sides later in their careers, only to fail whilst in charge. In a list inspired by Frank Lampard’s woes at Chelsea, we kick off with Marco van Basten, who missed out on Champions League qualification with Ajax, and Pippo Inzaghi took the reins at AC Milan two years after retirement, only to lead them to their worst position in a generation. There’s a visit to North London, where Ossie Ardiles abandoned the concept of a defence at Tottenham Hotspur, whilst former Arsenal legend Thierry Henry failed at Monaco - the club he made his debut for. Stuart Pearce spent a lot of money at Nottingham Forest in the Championship but lasted just six months, whilst Premier League winner Henning Berg couldn’t take Blackburn back to the top tier, spending less than two months at the helm. Alan Pardew gets a mention for underwhelming at Crystal Palace - although we will always have that FA Cup Final dance to remember him by - and there’s two visits to Newcastle. First, Kevin Keegan was forced out by ownership after dodgy transfer dealings, and Tyneside’s favourite son, Alan Shearer, oversaw the Magpies’ first relegation from the Premier League. This is a good list for those who like schadenfraude - enjoy!
