1920 Franco Tosi 50Hp Single-Cylinder 48-Litre Diesel Engine Starting Up - Sagra di San Biagio 2023

The fantastic Fair of San Biagio in Padule (MO) surprised us for the closing evening and made me extremely happy. Professor Gabriele Begnozzi has turned on one of the fantastic stationary engines that are part of his collection. It's a 1920 Franco Tosi Tipo H1 powered initially by heavy oil but currently operated with diesel and compressed air starting. This large engine, weighing 140 quintals and having a displacement of 48 litres with pneumatic injection, single cylinder, can develop 50Hp at a maximum speed of 180 rpm. The flywheel is huge, with a diameter of 2 meters. From 1920 until the 1970s, the engine worked at a water pumping plant in Portogruaro (Italy). You can see the installation of a large water tank (the pump is not seen), which allows the cooling of the engine, which initially had not seen that in the place where it was located, the water was directly drawn from the basin that housed it. I thank Professor Begnozzi for his extreme kindness towards me, for having told me carefully about the engine and last but not least for letting me climb the ladder to allow me to film the rocker arms, the valves and the mechanisms that control the cylinder stroke. La fantastica Fiera di San Biagio in Padule (MO) ci ha regalato una grande sorpresa per la serata di chiusura e questo mi ha reso estremamente felice. Il Professor Gabriele Begnozzi ha acceso uno dei fantastici motori stazionari che fanno parte della sua collezione. Si tratta di un Franco Tosi Tipo H1 del 1920 originariamente alimentato ad olio pesante ma attualmente messo in funzione con gasolio ed avviamento ad aria compressa. Questo grande propulsore dal peso di 140 quintali e da 48-Litri di cilindrata con inizione pneumatica, monocilindrico, è in grado di sviluppare 50Hp ad un regime massimo di 180 giri/min. Il volano è enorme, con un diametro di 2 metri. Dal 1920 e fino agli anni 70 il motore ha lavorato presso un'impianto idrovoro a Portogruaro. Potete notare l'installazione di un grande serbatoio dell'acqua (la pompa non si vede) che permette il raffreddamento del propulsore, cosa che originariamente non aveva visto che nel posto in cui era collocato l'acqua veniva direttamente prelevata dal bacino che lo ospitava. Ringrazio il professor Begnozzi per la sua estrema gentilezza nei miei confronti, per avermi parlato accuratamente del motore e non ultimo per avermi fatto salire sulla scaletta per permettermi di filmare i bilanceri, le valvole ed i meccanismi che comandano la corsa del cilindro.
