1987 VW Golf GTI MKII Twin-Engine (Bi-Motor) "Pikes Peak", One-Off Hillclimb Monster at Goodwood FOS

This is the incredible 1987 VW Golf GTI MKII Twin-Engine (Bi-Motor) "Pikes Peak", a one-off Hillclimb monster that has been unearthed after 31 years and a thorough restoration by the VW Classic Team. We are at the 2018 edition of the Goodwood Festival of Speed ​​(FOS) where the car has performed some demonstration laps. As you may have guessed, the peculiarity is the fact of using two engines, one at the front, one at the rear, derived from the 1.8-litre unit of the Golf GTI, both equipped with KKK turbo. At the time, with a supercharging pressure of 1.6 bar, the total power was 480kW (652hp) for only 1.020 kg of weight, crazy! Another peculiarity is the fact that both the front and rear axles are independent of each other. Therefore the car can travel in three different configurations, with both engines running or only the front one or only the rear one. Each engine is equipped with its 5-speed Hewland racing gearbox. As mentioned, the car has come into operation again after a restoration in which the technicians have taken great care in improving the cooling system and also the power has been reduced to "only" 500hp to have the right compromise between performance and reliability. In 1987 this prototype proved to be incredibly competitive, so much so that it could aspire to victory in Pikes Peak with pilot Jochi Kleint. Unfortunately, a few corners from the end broke a ball joint of the suspension which forced the driver to give up and abandon any dream of glory. It would have been too dangerous to keep pushing the car to the limit. It was a real surprise to see this mechanical jewel in action after such a long time.

Questa è l'incredibile VW Golf GTI MKII Twin-Engine (Bi-Motor) "Pikes Peak" del 1987, una one-off hillclimb monster tornata alla luce dopo 31 anni ed un'accurato restauro da parte del VW Classic Team. Ci troviamo all'edizione 2018 del Goodwood Festival of Speed (FOS) dove l'auto ha eseguito alcuni giri dimostrativi. Come avrete intuito la particolarità è il fatto di impiegare due motori, uno all'anteriore, uno al posteriore, derivati dall'unità 1.8-litri della Golf GTI entrambi dotati di turbo KKK. All'epoca, con una pressione di sovralimentazione ad 1.6 bar la potenza complessiva era di 480kW (652cv) per soli 1.020 Kg di peso, pazzesco! Altra particolarità è il fatto che entrambi gli assali, anteriore e posteriore, sono indipendenti tra solo e quindi l'auto può viaggiare in tre configurazioni differenti, con entrambi i motori in funzione oppure solo quello anteriore o solo quello posteriore. Ogni propulsore è dotato del suo cambio Hewland racing a 5 rapporti. Come detto, l'auto è entrata nuovamente in funzione dopo un restauro in cui i tecnici hanno messo gran cura nel migliorare il sistema di raffreddamento ed anche la potenza è stata ridotta a "soli" 500cv per avere il giusto compromesso fra prestazioni ed affidabilità. Nel 1987 questo prototipo si dimostrò incredibilmente competitivo tanto da poter ambire alla vittoria nella Pikes Peak con il pilota Jochi Kleint. Purtroppo in gara a poche curve dalla fine si ruppe un giunto sferico della sospensione che costrinse il pilota a dover desistere ed abbandonare ogni sogno di gloria. Sarebbe stato troppo pericoloso continuare a spingere l'auto al massimo. E' stata una vera sorpresa rivedere in azione questo gioiello di meccanica dopo così tanto tempo.
