200Hp Blitzen Benz (1909) - 21.5-Litre Start-up Engine, Sound & Actions! - Goodwood FOS 2022

I was pleased to see and film the fantastic 1909 Blitzen Benz 200Hp, also known as Benz 200Ps. We are at the Goodwood Festival of Speed ​​2022, where we usually find a great group of Pre-War cars. Blitzen in German means lightning; this car was built to achieve speed records. Using the 1908 Rennwagen 158PS model as a basis, the French driver Victor Héméry decided to construct a vehicle capable of breaking the record of 205.4 km/h belonging to the American Fred Marriott Stanley. The 4-cylinder in-line engine of the Rennwagen is increased up to the displacement of 21.5-Liters (from the original 15.1-Liters). New pistons are adopted while the distribution remains on a lateral camshaft with two valves per cylinder head. The engine is perfected up to 200 Hp at 1600 rpm, with a maximum torque of 353 Nm at 1000 rpm. On November 8, 1909, on the Brooklands circuit, Victor Héméry reached a top speed of 202.7 km/h. Subsequently, several pilots tried to break new speed records, so Mr Bob Burmann, at the wheel of the Blitzen Benz, on April 23, 1911, registered 228.1 km/h on the kilometre launched at Daytona Beach. That value remained undefeated until 1919. It's estimated that around six units of Blitzen Benz were built. Con enorme piacere ho potuto vedere e filmare la fantastica Blitzen Benz 200Hp del 1909, conosciuta anche come Benz 200Ps. Ci troviamo al Goodwood Festival of Speed 2022 dove solitamente troviamo un bel gruppo di Pre-War cars. Blitzen in tedesco vuol dire fulmine e difatti questa vettura è stata realizzata per ottenere record di velocità. Utilizzando come base il modello Rennwagen 158PS del 1908 il pilota francese Victor Héméry decide ci costruire un veicolo in grado di battere il record di 205.4 km/h fino a quel momento appartenete allo statunitense Fred Marriott Stanley. Il motore 4 cilindri in linea della Rennwagen viene aumentato fino alla cilindrata di 21.5-Litri (dagli originali 15.1-Litri). Si adottano nuovi pistoni mentre la distribuzione rimane ad asse a camme laterale con testata a due valvole per cilindro. Si perfeziona il motore fino ad ottenere 200 Hp a 1600 giri/min, con coppia massima di 353 Nm a 1000 giri/min. L'8 novembre del 1909, sul circuito di Brooklands, Victor Héméry raggiunge una velocità massima di 202.7 km/h. Successivamente diversi piloti si cimentarono nel tentativo di battere nuovi record di velocità. A bordo della Blitzen Benz Mr Bob Burmann il 23 aprile 1911 fa registrare 228.1 km/h sul chilometro lanciato a Daytona Beach. Tale valore è rimasto imbattuto fino al 1919. Si stima che siano state costruite circa 6 unità di Blitzen Benz.
