Fukuoka, Japan, October 6, 2019 – Yuki Ishikawa scored a match-high 23 points as Japan defeated Argentina 3-1 (25-19, 25-20, 26-28, 25-22) at the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup on Sunday.
Japan coach Yuichi Nakagaichi: "Yesterday we played the way we did and in that sense we gave ourselves pressure today. Everyone played well. Ishikawa was good, especially in the third set. His attacking from the left and right saved the team. Our service reception was not so good, though our blocks did exceed those of the opponent.
"Argentina kept their focus and played well, but we now have the strength to combat that."
Japan captain Masahiro Yanagida: "Argentina had a high side-out capability and good defence. In the third set they played well. We came back with a fresh mind after that. We will have tough matches ahead in Hiroshima."
Japan player Yuki Ishikawa: "This was a match that we had to win. They were good at side-out and had beaten the USA. Our block-defence functioned well."
Japan player Taishi Onodera: "We won 3-1 and were able to execute against an opponent with a quick attack. I was able to contribute in the middle block. We have gone 3-2 in Fukuoka and hope to win more in Hiroshima."
Argentina coach Marcelo Mendez: "Japan played a good game. We made mistakes in the first and second sets on attack. We played better in the third set and won it. In the fourth set Japan got their rhythm back. They are well organised in service and defence and have high-level skills."
Argentina captain Martin Ramos: "Japan worked well in defence and attack. We attacked well in the third set. Apart from that we did not attack well and that is how we ended up with this result."
