Ari Vatanen's 1988 Peugeot 405 T16 GR "Pikes Peak" - The Legend at 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed

How wonderful to finally see the Peugeot 405 T16 GR "Pikes Peak", with which the driver Ari Vatanen won the edition of the American hill climb in 1988. This car is a true legend because the Finnish driver reached the amazing record time of 10:47:77. Car with high-level technical features such as 4-wheel drive and steering and a carbon-Kevlar version of the 405 bodywork. The purpose-built chassis is made of sheet steel and steel tubes. The engine is positioned very low in front of the right rear wheel, with the turbocharger on the opposite side. Despite its 1905 cc (116.25 in³), the XU 9T Inline-4 engine can deliver 600 bhp (447.4 kW) at 7,000 rpm and a massive torque of 735 Nm at 4,500 rpm. A 6-speed manual gearbox with a carbon clutch takes care of moving it. Thanks to a weight of only 880 kg (1940 lbs) in the right hands of the Finnish driver, it proved to be a winning weapon, consecrating the Vatanen-Peugeot 405 T16 duo to legends. Che meraviglia aver visto finalmente la Peugeot 405 T16 GR "Pikes Peak" con cui il pilota Ari Vatanen ha vinto l'edizione della corsa in salita Americana nel 1988. Questa vettura è una vera leggenda perchè il pilota finlandese alla guida all'epoca realizzò lo strepitoso tempo record di 10:47:77. Vettura con caratteristiche tecniche di alto livello come la 4 ruote motrici e sterzanti ed una versione in carbonio-kevlar della carrozzeria della 405. Il telaio appositamente costruito è realizzato in lamiera e tubi d'acciaio. Il motore è posizionato molto in basso davanti alla ruota posteriore destra con il turbocompressore sul lato opposto. Nonostante i suoi 1905 cc (116.25 in³) il propulsore XU 9T Inline-4 è in grado di erogare 600 bhp (447.4 kw) a 7.000 giri/min ed una massiccia coppia di ben 735 Nm a 4.500 Giri/min. A muoverlo ci pensa un cambio manuale a 6 marce con frizione in carbonio. Grazie ad un peso di soli 880 kg (1940 lbs), nelle mani giuste del pilota Finlandese, si dimostrò un'arma vincente consacrando alla leggende la coppia Vatanen- Peugeot 405 T16.
