The hosts of the inaugural 2018 Volleyball Nations League men’s finals, which will take place in Lille in July, have enjoyed considerable success in the last three years.
After an amazing year in 2015, where they captured the 2015 FIVB Volleyball World League title with an impressive sweep of their Group 2 matches and an even more striking appearance in the Group 1 Final Six in Rio, France added another World League medal in 2016, finishing third with a 3-0 sweep of Italy in the bronze medal game. They also capped their brilliant 2015 season with the gold medal at the European Championship in Sofia.
France’s success in 2015 and 2016 continued into 2017, where they stunned Brazil 3-2 in the World League final in Curitiba to claim their second gold in the competition in three years.
At the most recent FIVB Volleyball World Championship in 2014, the team topped a second round pool ahead of hosts Poland and progressed all the way to the third place playoff, before losing in straight sets to Germany.
France competed in the inaugural edition of the World League in 1990, and have participated continuously since 1999. In 2006, they finished second to Brazil but had their share of disappointment in subsequent seasons before the success in 2015. In 2009, they narrowly missed out on a place in the Final Six, falling at the last hurdle to Argentina. They suffered another setback in 2010 when they again missed the finals and finished twelfth overall.
France competed in the Olympic Games for the fourth time at Rio 2016, finishing ninth. Their best ever Olympic performance was an eight place finish at Seoul 1988.
