After the London 2012 Olympic Games, where they finished fifth, the German men’s team enjoyed one of the most successful periods in their history. In 2012, they also reached the final round of the FIVB World League for the first time, also finishing fifth, before capturing bronze at the 2014 FIVB World Championship.
However, the team missed the 2015 season of the World League to focus on the inaugural European Games in Baku, where they won gold. When they re-joined the competition in 2016, they were in Group 3. Germany's attempt at immediate promotion to Group 2 last year was in vain, as they lost the group final 3-1 at home in Frankfurt to Slovenia.
Germany also failed to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games at the European qualifiers at home in Berlin. They have appeared at the Olympic Games on two occasions, finishing in ninth place at Beijing 2008 and fifth place finish at London 2012. However, Germany have enjoyed some recent success on the continental stage, winning European Championship silver last year.
Before reunification, East Germany finished fourth at Mexico City 1968, before winning the silver medal at Munich 1972. East Germany were also crowned world champions in 1969 and clinched the FIVB World Cup a year later.
