Hiroshima, Japan, October 9, 2019 – Aaron Russell scored a match-high 18 points as the United States defeated Iran 3-1 (25-18, 22-25, 25-18, 25-12) at the FIVB Men’s World Cup on Tuesday.

USA coach John Speraw: "Max Holt was good tonight from the service line. He won us that first set with his serving. Matt Anderson had some unforced errors in the second set which was uncharacteristic. We came back in the third set with resolve. Iran always fights. We have demonstrated a lot of poise in this tournament. It is tough to be undefeated. I’m exceptionally pleased with our play."

USA captain Micah Christenson: "We are very happy with the win. Iran plays a unique and fast and beautiful style of volleyball. We were strong in the first set. In the third and fourth sets we responded with efforts plays and our service was better.

USA player Erik Shoji: "Iran always gives us trouble. We got going in the second set. First match against Argentina was tough. We learned from that and have been together as a team. Tomorrow we play Brazil and we always have big games against them."

Iran coach Igor Kolakovic: "In the first set, USA played at a high level in service. The second set was more balanced and we took advantage of opportunities. They continued their strong service in the third set. This was a good school for us and our young players. We play good but sometimes are far from the level of USA."

Iran captain Mir Saeid Marouflakrani: "It was not our day. We only showed our quality in the second set. They served stronger than us. The U.S. is one of the best teams in the world. We have some young players now. We have to think about the next matches."
