Although they still have some way to go, the Iranian men’s team have been on the rise in recent few years, this includes their first-ever appearance in the World League finals in 2014, which ended in a fourth place finish after a loss to Italy in the bronze medal match, as well as their Olympic debut at the Rio 2016 Games, where they finished fifth.
Since joining the World League in 2013, Iran have been a dominant force in Group 1 of the competition, providing a challenge for any opponent. This year will be their fourth straight year amongst the world’s most elite teams.
Iran have featured in the FIVB Volleyball World Championship for the past three years and finished sixth at the 2014 edition in Poland, where a strong Russian side defeated them in the final round. They have also enjoyed recent continental success, defeating Japan in 2014 to win the gold medal at the Asian Games in Incheon, Korea.
In the 2016 FIVB Volleyball World League, Iran finished with a 4-5 record, failing to make the Final Six in Krakow and in 2017 they only managed a 3-6 record, resulting in an eleventh place finish in Group 1.
