Plovdiv, Bulgaria, June 30, 2019 – USA beat Iran 3-0 (27-25, 25-21, 25-20) to close the round robin phase of the 2019 FIVB Men’s Volleyball Nations League handing the Asians just their third loss of the competition.
USA player Benjamin Patch: “This is a new experience for us. There are a lot of new guys here. You can’t know what’s going to happen but we came out fighting as hard as we can. It’s always good to come home with a win. To give energy to the other guys and carry it to the finals. Overall it was a successful trip. It’s a lot of pressure when you play with guys you’re not that familiar with. Who don’t know the system we’re playing with. It’s not the normal group you’re traveling with but it was a good experience for the future. Everyone tried their best and we come away with two wins. We’re comin’ in hot to Chicago! It’s gonna be a good final tournament with the best teams in the world and we’re excited to start competing.”
USA coach Robert Neilson: “I’m happy with the way our guys played. We did a nice job receiving the ball, put some pressure on them from the service line. Our team did a very good job competing in this pool, that’s what we wanted to see from a group of young guys who are still trying to find their identity and play consistent volleyball. I’m happy with their performance and there’s a lot of bright things in the future for a lot of these guys.”
Iran coach Igor Kolakovic: “USA was much better than us today especially in service. Congratulations to them! I am happy because nobody else got injured today in such a competitive and close match. At the moment we have four injured players who have to recover for the Finals in Chicago. We are going there to fight for victories, match by match and we will see what is going to happen.”
Iran player Milad Ebadipour: “We didn’t play our best game today but it was a good training for us. The most important thing is to achieve victories in the Finals. We had brilliant performances in the tournament so far and we proved that we have one of the best teams in the world. But it is not enough for us. We have to show the same during the Final Six in Chicago. We have a big chance to take the gold there or at least a medal but we are going there to fight and to play and win game by game.”
