Speak to most people who have followed Man United over the last few years, and you can expect to hear similar things – that the club has deep-rooted structural problems which have developed since the Glazers took over in 2005, and that these problems have made it almost impossible for managers to succeed to the level expected at Old Trafford, despite the eye-watering sums that have been spent in the years since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

But over the last year, and particularly in the last few months, club captain Harry Maguire has taken an increasing amount of the blame for United’s poor form on the pitch. He was most recently booed by fans each time he touched the ball in United’s pre-season friendly against Crystal Palace in Australia, and it of course isn’t the first time that supporters have loudly made their displeasure known.

Back in March, news of him being substituted off in the dying embers of a Champions League knock-out defeat to Atletico Madrid was greeted with a chorus of aggressive cheers at Old Trafford, a stadium where such behaviour is traditionally frowned upon. And it’s not just followers of United – two weeks later, he was roundly booed by England fans at Wembley.

But what has led to the centre-back becoming such a figure of hate among fans? And beyond the flat-out abuse, is the level of criticism he receives justified? On today’s FD Explained, we’re going to take a look.
