Former SmackDown Tag Team Champion Erick Rowan made a surprise return, only to help Bryan in retaining the WWE Championship, by interfering in the WWE Championship match. This came out of nowhere, and the fans were left stunned by the turn of events. With Rowan by his side, Bryan triumphantly held the WWE Championship, as Styles was left unconscious in the ring.
