The Intercontinental Championship has a long history of being the workhorse championship. Back when there were just two titles up for grabs, the biggest star would have the WWE tile but the best worker would usually hold the Intercontinental Championship, like Bret and Owen Hart. Top tier talent like Triple H and Chris Jericho have held the belt too, and ascending stars like The Rock and Jeff Hardy won the title to improve their standing in the company. AJ Styles joined this illustrious group of champions with a hard fought win over Daniel Bryan in the Intercontinental Championship Tournament Finals on the latest episode of SmackDown. We are the Wrestling Hub and this is Why AJ Styles Won the Intercontinental Championship.
Bryan and Styles both won matches prior to this to make it to the finals. Styles and Bryan beat stars like Shinsuke Nakamura and Drew Gulak on their way to the finals. Bryan is a former IC Champion, while Styles just moved from Raw and had a lot of momentum on his side. The two had an excellent, slow building match in which they employed classic wrestling psychology to wear each other down. They worked over specific body parts, had a whole bunch of near falls and a genuine air of 'whos going to win?'. Well, the winner was AJ Styles, who pinned Bryan after a Styles Clash and Phenomenal Forearm.
Why did WWE put the belt on Styles? Mainly because momentum is more on Styles's side right now. Bryan hasn't been a featured member of WWE programming recently and draws a lot of his respect from the crowd based on his work over the last few years. Styles has been spotlighted on SmackDown ever since he came from Raw and has genuinely felt like the biggest star on the roster. He was heavily featured during Money in the Bank, technically winning the match before accidentally dropping the briefcase into Otis's hands. However, this one match has generated interest in seeing Styles and Bryan possibly feud with each other over the title. Bryan seemed to be the heel in the match, but we all know that these are two wrestlers that everyone like despite what their on screen 'affiliation’ is. A series of matches would be welcome, especially considering the weak in-ring showings we have seen on WWE TV since the pandemic began.
Now that Styles is champion, what’s the future for the belt and the brand? The Intercontinental Championship has felt bigger than the world title on the brand for the first time in years. Braun Strowman being in a nonsensical feud with The Miz and Morrison which exists to set him up as the exact thing he’s been pushed as the last 5 years. With no Fiend in sight, Strowman has lacked the ability to draw fans into investing in his reign. AJ Styles will not have that problem, as his championship reign has gotten off on the best possible foot with his performance tonight. AJ Styles may be the best Intercontinental Champion we’ve had in a long time.
