Alex Hales hit the highest ever score by an Englishman in the world record total of 444-3 as England crushed Pakistan by 169 runs to clinch the Royal London One-Day Series at Trent Bridge.

The outstanding opener eclipsed Robin Smith’s 167 not out against Australia at Edgbaston from 1993 with a thrill-a-minute 171 from 122 balls, carving 22 fours and four sixes in the afternoon sunshine.

Records tumbled as Jos Buttler and Eoin Morgan then smashed a torrent of sixes in explosive half centuries, with England battering hapless Pakistan with the most sixes (16) and the most boundaries (59) in ODI history.
