The NBA lost a valued family member on Wednesday when Bob MacKinnon passed away at the age of 87. A highly successful college coach best known for his years at Canisius, MacKinnon began his NBA career in 1951 as a member of the Syracuse Nationals. He then became an assistant coach and scout for the Buffalo Braves as well as the head coach of the ABA’s Spirits of St. Louis, and would later return to Buffalo to serve as the General Manager of the Braves. After the Braves left Buffalo in 1978, MacKinnon coached and scouted in the NBA. Twice he served as head coach of the New Jersey Nets (1980-81 and 1987-88) and he finished out his NBA career as a consultant to the Nets.
