The Renault RS01 is the first single-seater powered by an F1-spec turbo engine. Since 1967 with the introduction of the 3.0L Ford Cosworth DFV V8 had dominated Formula 1 racing apart from Ferrari's flat-12. But in 1977 with the help of Gordini and Alpine, Renault dug up an old clause in the regulations that stated that beside the 3.0L naturally aspirated configuration, a 1.5L forced induction format was also allowed (no engine manufacturer had gone for the second option since 1967).
The engine was not an entirely new design but starting from a 2.0L V6 that was already in use in Alpine endurance racers since 1975, they reduced the displacement till 1.5 and increased the rev limiter from 9,500 rpm up to 11,000 rpm in order to avoid the loss of power. This was associated with a single Garret turbine that allowed the engine to produce around 500hp and 370 Nm of torque. The car was never intended to be a race winner from the start, but rather a racing testbed for the revolutionary turbo engine and it was used for 3 years.
Watch it in action during the 2017 Goodwood Festival of Speed and hear how similar it sounds like to the modern F1 cars!
