Nagano, Japan, October 4, 2019 - Iran claimed their first win of the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup on Friday, Aliasghar Mojarad top-scoring with 15 points as they came from behind to beat Canada 3-1 (18-25, 25-23, 27-25, 25-19) at Nagano White Ring arena.

Iran coach Igor Kolakovic: “After two defeats this was a really important victory for us because our confidence was down a little bit. After the first set we started to play with our energy and I’m so happy because some players showed their quality, especially players from the bench and the young players who are really the future of Iranian volleyball. I hope that we can keep this kind of energy for the next games.”

Iran captain Mir Saeid Marouflakrani: “I think today was a great victory for us after two losses in the first two days. Today, our young players were so perfect, and I’m so happy with this victory. I’m so happy that our young players fought for each point. They played point by point and at the end I think they deserved to win today.”

Canada coach Daniel Lewis: “It was a good game for the most part by our team. Iran played well and executed their middle attack very well against us. We had problems finding solutions for this. We probably need to be a little bit more disciplined and better on defence, and then I think we’d have a few more opportunities. Our guys fought hard and fought well and they never gave up, so I was happy about that. We’ll probably have to take a look at the video and see how we can get a bit more efficient in transition. At tight moments we missed a few opportunities that I think changed the game, but I’m proud of the guys. They fought for the whole match and we’ll keep searching for our first victory.”

On Canada’s ongoing search for a first win:
“I think because of the nature of this tournament there’s not a lot of time to train. You can’t practice a lot so you have to be patient and you have to manage frustrations. It will get more difficult to get a win because we could potentially get more frustrated. I think we’re doing this well, not to worry so much about the outcome and focus more on execution, and if we do this then I think it will be easier to find the victory.”

Canada captain Nicholas Hoag: “First of all, congratulations to Iran. They really upped their level and their energy after the first set, and they put a little bit more pressure on their serves, which put us in big difficulty. On our side, I think we lacked a little bit of pressure on the serve. We had our chances but we had a hard time taking the opportunities to finish those sets, to play some good side out at the end of the sets.”
