Matsumoto, Japan, August 26, 2015 – Former European champions Serbia powered past African runners-up Algeria 3-0 here Wednesday afternoon for their third straight win at the 2015 FIVB Women’s World Cup following an opening 3-1 loss to China.
The Serbian women, who had won the European championship in 2011, collected the 25-7, 25-11 and 25-3 win in 58 minutes to improve to a 3-1 win-loss record. In the third set, they had an amazing 14-0 start and went on to seal their most lopsided set win at this tournament.
Serbia coach Zoran Terzic rotated his players during the match and Brankica Mihajlovic and Jovana Stevanovic scored 11 points apiece. Serbia outshot Algeria 37-6 and led 15-1 and 7-0 in blocking and ace serving respectively.
Serbia captain Maja Ognjenovic: I’m very happy and glad we won this kind of match. We knew Algeria weren’t so strong and not at our level, but every time we play this kind of match it is difficult because, to be honest, it’s hard to be motivated. But I’m happy how we performed on court because all 14 players had a chance to play. I’m also happy that game by game we are in better shape and this match was a kind of preparation for our match against Korea, which is important, so we can be satisfied.
Serbia coach Zoran Terzic: We cannot compare the two teams because there’s such a big difference in the level and in terms of quality, but my team played seriously and we respected our opponents. We tried to use this game for some things but I’m not sure if we managed it or not. In the last few games, my team were in very good shape and I hope we stay in good shape for the next few games, which will be much more difficult than today.
Algeria captain Silya Magnana: We lost; we know that. But our first objective is to make progress. We knew that our opponents were stronger than us; they are very tall and very difficult for us.
Algeria coach Henni Abdelhalim: The second set was the best set we’ve played but I really don’t understand what happened in the third set. We committed faults on reception and our spikes were bad and that was the main difference between the second and third sets. We must focus on our own performance, not that of our opponents. I hope this competition will bring us to a better level; that’s our objective.
