3 years on from Arsene Wenger’s departure, Arsenal are coming off consecutive 8th-placed finishes, and have lost their reputation as one of the country’s most entertaining teams. Having spent £291m net since 2017, the club has little to show for their outlay, with big money signings like Thomas Partey and Nicolas Pepe failing to make an impact, and their creativity struggles have led many fans to write off their chances this season before the campaign even begins.

With Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, and Chelsea miles ahead, it’s hard to see how the Gunners can break back into the Champions League spots, and for all the criticism of Mikel Arteta’s conservative tactics and strange decisions, it’s hard to argue that the squad deserves better.

But why are Arsenal so poor at both signing and selling players? How did they bungle the post-Wenger succession so badly? And are there any indications that things might get better? We tried to find out.
