After 3 years and 8 months in charge, Roy Hodgson, the Premier League’s oldest manager at 73 left Crystal Palace, the club he’d supported since he was a boy, in May 2021.

His successor was going to have their work cut out. The former England manager had taken over in September 2017 with Palace rooted to the bottom of the table having lost their first 4 League games of the season without scoring a single goal.

He steered the club to 11th in his first campaign and secured solid mid table finishes in his next 3 with Palace never once entering the relegation zone following his first 6 months in charge. Despite leaving on the back of a tide of goodwill, he left a club with an average age of 28.8, a figure topped only by Lazio in Europe’s Top 5 Leagues and 22 players out of contract.

Step forward Premier League legend Patrick Vieira, who returned to these shores with a fair amount of scepticism attached to him, with Football Daily one of many media outlets suggesting things could prove difficult. Across the first 15 matches of the season though Palace have largely been excellent. Welcome back to FD Explained, this is “why we were wrong about Patrick Vieira.”
